I got to attend a speech by FAA Administrator Michael Huerta in DC this morning. He talked about how the FAA funding model needed to change so the could get things like NextGen, the new ATC system, up and running and how the idea of the Safety Management System is being rolled out. For SMS he achnolwledged that changing the culture of the FAA, and it's inspectors, might be the hardest part of getting it fully up and running. he seems like a reasonable guy and does seem tone getting stuff done.

Haven't we been talking about Next Gen ATC for years now? Having read about what our Republican government has in mind for the next budget, getting more money will likely be a huge challenge.

yep. He is a advocate. So much so that he is going out and visiting many of the offices to make the point directly. He said he was the first Administrator to visit the Long Beach ACO in over 30 years. Long Beach has a huge FAA office! Kind of funny/sad. They were so excited to see him that they had him sign his picture that hangs by the door.

yeah, but years is like two weeks in government time.
I think that is why they want to change the funding model. We are talking safety issues and they are tired of politics slowing things down and driving up costs. It will be an uphill battle for sure.

The problem is that so many members of our government refuse to listen to the very people who are experts in a given field, believing instead that they know more than the experts. There is nobody so blind as the one who refuses to see.
